Review
Jim Kaplan's The Auditor's Guide to Internet Resources, 2nd Edition

By: Ron Keister Date: 6-15-00

The Auditor's Guide to Internet Resources, 2nd Edition has a lot of very useful information for auditors interested in using the Internet as an audit tool. In fact, there is good information for anyone interested in using the Internet. While the whole book is useful, for auditors the most interesting and immediately useful areas include:

A. The Internet Literacy Checklist B. The Digital Literacy Self-Assessment Tool C. Information on how auditors can use the Internet D Internet Search strategies and evaluating search results E. Guidelines and techniques for auditors to evaluate Internet information and data

The Internet Literacy Checklist and Digital Literacy Self-Assessment Tool will help auditors understand their Internet strengths and areas that could use improvement. Audit Directors and Managers can use these to help identify audit staff training needs, as well as help them assess their reliance on auditors' use of Internet information. The effective use of these can help improve the quality and quantity of audit work.

The Internet audit use areas presented in this book are some things that all audit organizations should seriously consider. I fear too many are not making high-quality use of the Internet, resulting in less economical and valuable audits. With the usual limited resources, audit organizations must focus their efforts on key organizational issues in an efficient and effective manner.

Knowing how to identify and find the "right" audit information via the Internet in a well-organized and successful way is essential. This book provides excellent techniques and ideas for how to achieve this. First, it provides a good method for identifying what information should be searched for. Then it provides excellent Internet search techniques and ideas. Last, it provides a first-rate way to assess the adequacy and validity of the Internet information obtained.

If the above were the only things in this book, it is worth the price. But no, there are other interesting areas including:

A. The list of available Internet features and how to understand and use them B. Good information on audit discussion groups, tips on use, and a thorough list C. Excellent "real-life" examples of how auditors have used the Internet D. A great list of technical data that can help reduce the dreaded call to "support" and the wait on them to "fix it" E. Last, but not least, is the details or inside Internet information that help you understand the Internet, how it works, and it's good and not so good features.

Reviewer Background: Mr. Keister has a bachelor and master degrees in Accounting; is a CIA and CPA; and has more than 25 years auditing experience, the last 20 in internal auditing in both large and small organizations, private industry and higher education. He has been using computers since about 1982 and the Internet since 1995, but is not an IT auditor.

Billings Microscope Collection of the Medical Museum Armed Forces Institute of Pathology
Published in Paperback by Government Printing Office (April, 1990)
Authors: Helen R. Purtle and John A. Ey
Average review score:

microscopes through time
I ordered this book some time ago and find that it has been a continuous sourse of information. The details of individual microscopes are excellent and will inspire any collector or anyone interested in microscopy. My only true critisism (minor) is in the layout, the book is divided into sections due to the additions of different collections which upsets the cronological arrangement. Over all a magnificent work, I would be lost without it.

The quintessential reference book for microscope collectors
The Billings Microscope Collection is a very straight-forward reference book with hundreds of photographs of antique and vintage microscopes. The Billings Collection catalogs the fascinating history of the light microscope and the many innovations and improvements given to this most important optical device. I can't imagine that this fantastic reference book will stay out of print forever considering america's now insatiable appetite for all things old. However, and thankfully the catalog is only an historical reference and not a price guide. If you never met a microscope you didn't love, then this is the book for you.

Catnapper

Kitty-fied!
My first impression of this tape was that it was iffy, based on the narrator's voice, which sounded a little weird to me. I proceeded with an open mind, however, and found the tape to be everything it promised and more! Unlike most other relaxation tapes that start with the exercise of relaxing the feet and working upward, this tape started with the practical idea of relaxing the head and face first, working downward. This is a superior concept if you think about it: After a tense day at the office, who can or wants to think about relaxing their feet when their head and neck are hurting? Catnapper zero's in on what's important by relaxing the head, neck AND MIND first. As a result, I found myself easily falling into a deep trance state whisping me away from distracting thoughts, aches and pains. The music used is soothing - kind of like "floating in space" music. It's one of my favorites. Also, a suggestion for people who want to use it to meditate: If you're the type who likes to lay down while meditating, try using Catnapper with one of your arms pointing upward from the elbow. If you start to fall asleep, your arm will start to fall and you'll remain awake instead.

A quick nap in half the time
A friend of mine introduced me to this. Listened to this wilst lying down and the nap was enough to refresh us enough to enjoy our first day of holiday after our flight arriving at 6am!

Cato Handbook for Congress: Policy Recommendations for the 108th Congress
Published in Paperback by Cato Inst (February, 2003)
Authors: Cato Institute, Edward H. Crane, and David Boaz
Average review score:

An essential political survey of issues
This is the fifth handbook for new Congress which raises issues likely to be major agenda items for decades; form tax cuts and public health program reforms to creating policies for returning the federal government to a healthier size and scope. Included is an update on terrorism initiatives and their threats to civil liberties. The Cato Handbook For Congress is an essential political survey of issues which are certain not to become quickly dated.

Well Thought Out
A logical, concise, and thorough analysis of issues no body wants to discuss. The topics are well presented one by one within the context of the threats to the American way of life as prescribed by the US Constitution. It seems that we have lost our way and this book is a road map to set us back on course. Major topics include: Terrorism, Government Reform, Civil Liberties, Money and Banking, Domestic Policy, Regulation, Energy & Environment, Foreign & Domestic Policy, International Economic Policy. The Cato Institute is addressing the issues here that every congressional representative, senator, and the president are afraid to address because US politics is not about doing what is right, but who can steal the most.

As a libertarian I am sickened by the current state of the state. Federalism is dead, boondoggle's are a dime a dozen, the government rapes me every paycheck, social security is a pyramid scam that allows only a select few early participates tremendous return, the world cop (US) is hated by all nations and yet it costs us billions to protect these whiney countries, government jobs are just an extended welfare program, corporate welfare is offensive, environmental laws favor deep pockets, etc. This excellent book does more then just identify the problems. It suggests logical remedies to the many problems the government has created. The writers not only balance the budget, but they cut $309 Billion in chapter 23 --every I agree with every cut. I have sent a copy of this book to both my congressional and senatorial representative with a note that this is my desired action plan. I challenge every American that loves this country and wants the insanity to stop to do the same.

Child Behavior: The Classic Childcare Manual from the Gesell Institute of Human Development
Published in Paperback by Perennial Press (February, 1992)
Author: Francis L. Ilg
Average review score:

Excellent reference book for parents. Has all the answers.
With four children and seven grandchildren, Gesell Institute's CHILD BEHAVIOR has become our constant reference guide. The book's "Ages and Stages" section was one we always anxiously referred to when one of our children was doing something unusual. It was reassuring to us to find out they were each very normal for their age. In fact, it almost seemed like the particular section had been written after observing what our kids were doing at that specific stage in their development. Today it is not unusual for one of our children to call us with a question they have about their kids. Even though our original copy is over 35 years old, the examples and descriptions still fit. Many things may have changed over the years, but children seem to develop and react similarly to specific situations. Just take one look at our tattered copy and you will see that this has been a well-used reference book in our home and we recommend it to any parent or grandparent.

this book was recommended by my best friend
this book has been 100% on the mark foretelling stages in my niece's development. she is 4 years old now and the book has been her parents best guide. a much better book than the "what to expect" series.

China Chic: East Meets West

Authors: Valerie Steele, John S. Major, and Fashion Institute of Technology
Average review score:

MIND BLOWING,REVELOUTIONARY AND VERY VERY SEXY
China chic is a truly haunting experienc

Smashingly beautiful book. New twist on Chinese fashion.
*China Chic* is a gorgeous yet scholarly study of the interchange between China and the West in terms of fashion. Among the many intriguing points is how women of Chinese ancestry in the West are now influencing fashion design in new, very sophisticated ways. The combined efforts of Valerie Steele, John Major, and others make this book a must-read, just as the exhibit at the Fashion Institute in spring 1999 that this book used as a basis was a must-see for anyone who cares about fashion, culture and dress, or Chinese history.

Chinese History: A Manual (Harvard-Yenching Institute Monograph Series , No 46)
Published in Paperback by Harvard Univ (October, 1998)
Author: Endymion Wilkinson
Average review score:

Peerless Resource for Chinese Historiography
Wilkinson's 'Chinese History: A Manual' is an essential volume on the bookshelf of any serious Chinese historiographer or scholar of Chinese history. Since the publication of the first edition, this book has very much become a standard reference for Chinese history. Note, though, that this is not a textbook on Chinese history, although one can certainly learn a great deal about Chinese history from it. It serves better as a handbook on Chinese history, an informative reference one consults to discover resources for the study of divers aspects of Chinese history.

The first section provides an excellent introduction to Chinese history, and the methods of Chinese historiography. Topics such as language, geography, demography, chronology, statistics, etc., are introduced, and reference works such as dictionaries and encyclopaedias are discussed in some detail. This section provides much of the groundwork necessary for study of Chinese history.

The remainder of the book is devoted to the description of the primary and secondary sources of historical documents, categorising them by genre, era and topic. Some 4,300 sources and references are described, from pre-Qin periods to the modern era, making the book an excellent first-port-of-call for identifying historical texts and documents. Wilkinson's work is especially helpful because the resources are not merely presented as lists, but their context is described, and often, some evaluation of the quality, worth, reliability, ubiquity, etc., is presented. Difficulties and obstacles encountered in research are mentioned, and solutions are often suggested.

This is a revised version of the 1998 edition, enlarged to include republican period. An already excellent manual was improved upon, and there is little I can say to criticise this edition. The book is physically well bound and the print is clear and of a good size: no magnifying glass is necessary. One particularly laudable feature of this book is that where English is employed for terms particular to Chinese culture or history, the Chinese term is given throughout, and the name of texts and sources are always given in Chinese. Moreover, romanisation is generally accompanied by Chinese characters, elminating the often frustrating guesswork involved in trying to figure out the characters corresponding to a romanised phrase. My only complaint is that, although Pinyin romanisation is used consistently, the tone marks are generally omitted.

In short, then, I have nothing but praise for Wilkinson's work. It is an indispensible guide to the study of Chinese historiography, and constitutes an excellent resource for anyone at all interested in Chinese history. Although written as a handbook for research, I have found the book suited to casual browse, and I often use it as a coffee-book table: I open it to a random page, and, more often than not, I find something that strikes my fancy and piques my interest. All in all, this book is a valuable resource seldom to be met with elsewhere.

An invaluable guide to all aspects of traditional China
This is an annotated resarch guide and bibliography, as described by the publisher, but has much more: introductions to the sources available for the writing of traditional Chinese history (up to 1911); shrewd evaluations of reference and research tools involved; explanation of how the study of the field developed; brief summaries of the state of research on a wide variety of topics, including:origins of Chinese characters, history of Chinese food, how to handle dates and chronology; how to find out where places are and who people are... well, you get the idea. The MANUAL is useful not only for primary research, but also for finding articles and secondary references on many topics (my own bibliography, CHINA (Clio: World Bibliography Series, 1997) lists mainly books). The term "Manual" in Wilkinson's title really describes it, i.e. something which must be "at hand" for anyone working in Chinese history, and a "must" for libraries.

The Cim Handbook of Export Marketing: A Practical Guide to Opening and Expanding Markets Overseas (Professional (Chartered Institute of Marketing).)
Published in Paperback by Butterworth-Heinemann (October, 1999)
Authors: Chris Noonan and Ian Campbell
Average review score:

Target market - author's comment
The text is aimed at practising international marketers, although also of benefit to students of more advanced or specialised international marketing programmes. The material is developed from years of line management and international marketing consultancy, including with many blue chip multinational corporations, across many global markets. Much of the material has been used, honed and customised, on many in-company team development programmes run by the author.

Hands on export marketing
The author clearly is a hands on international marketer, sharing his experience across many markets and aspects of international marketing. Whilst is is of good use for students of international marketing, particularly those of CIM and Institute of Export professional exams, I think it is particularly relevant for practisng marketers.

Covert Cadre: Inside the Institute for Policy Studies
Published in Hardcover by Jameson Books (May, 1988)
Authors: S. Steven Powell, Richard Milhous Nixon, and David Horowitz
Average review score:

Is this real? Read for yourself. Research the biblio.
Documentation galore. While the book is a bit outdated, the material still holds much truth with respect to current politics. Good luck trying to find a copy, this has been out of print for some time. According to Powell, this supposed non-profit think tank and its numerous spinoff's have established themselves in the confines of Washington as a purely research/academic oriented organization with the intent to change public policy for the better. Unfortunately, he finds many of their founders and directors along with published literature and recorded discussion groups to have an opposite appeal and hidden agenda. Admittedly, the book is leftist centered and this reviewer is not going to deny that the right is not involved in their own misdeeds, but after investigating much of the bibliography I found that the documentation speaks for itself and gives a wonderful insight into the labyrinth of power politics. Be frightened, be very frightened, this is not something many are willing to admit much less accept, especially with so many still involved. Research what you have trouble swallowing, you just might come away a disheartened believer.

this book was grate it tells all the screts about the gov.
this book is so cool cus its true and it tells the truth about the government. /ps. dont let the government skrew you over like thay did to dennis r.trist, hes a realy cool guy.
